There are two types of professional teeth whitening treatment: take-home or at-home kits and in-office or chairside whitening.

Take-home teeth whitening kits use prescription-strength whitening gel and silicone trays to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. Teeth are whitened gradually for more natural results and the stronger bleaching agents can whiten your teeth better than off-the-shelf products.

In-office teeth whitening consists of an office visit and special whitening chemicals that must be applied by a trained dentist to avoid damaging the oral tissue. In-office teeth whitening produces fast, dramatic, and instantly visible results, often in just one visit.

Why is professional teeth whitening so expensive?

While professional teeth whitening is more expensive than standard over-the-counter whitening products, it delivers faster, brighter, and more reliable results. Not only is the concentration of professional whitening gel stronger, but it is applied under the supervision of a dental professional, who will make sure your teeth and gums are healthy enough for treatment, if there are any crowns or veneers that will not respond to the whitening, and that the gel won’t cause any injury to the oral tissues.

Are there any side effects to professional teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic dental procedure that has virtually no side effects. The strength of the chemicals used in professional teeth whitening can cause some temporary sensitivity and gum irritation, but most symptoms improve within 48 hours of treatment. Discomfort that persists beyond 48 hours can often be alleviated by a temporary change to your diet, including limiting hot, cold, crunchy, or acidic foods, and by using a sensitivity toothpaste.

How long does professional teeth whitening last?

Professional teeth whitening is a cosmetic, restorative procedure, not a preventative one, so the results won’t last forever. How long your results from professional teeth whitening will last varies from patient to patient and depends on several factors, including the type and degree of the stains and your lifestyle. 

With good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, your teeth could stay brilliantly white for anywhere from 6 months to 2-3 years. Smoking or other nicotine use and regular consumption of dark or acidic beverages like wine and coffee will eventually start to dull your smile again.

When should I not get my teeth whitened?

While many people are good candidate for professional teeth whitening treatments, there are some situations where your dentist may advise against it, particularly if you have:

Gum disease. Gum disease exposes sensitive tooth nerves and tissues that can make whitening treatments painful. You may need to have your gum disease treated before you can whiten your teeth.

Tooth decay. Tooth decay or cavities will need to be treated before you can receive professional whitening treatment to protect the tooth—or teeth—from future damage, prevent further health problems, and restore the tooth’s full functionality.

Stains caused by antibiotic use. Tooth stains caused by some medications, such as tetracycline, cannot be removed with whitening, even professional teeth whitening. Your dentist may instead recommend veneers or other cosmetic or restorative procedures to brighten your smile.

Sensitive teeth. The high concentration of chemicals in professional teeth whitening can further irritate sensitive teeth and gums. Your dentist may recommend that you begin using sensitivity toothpaste or receive fluoride treatment before having your teeth whitened to help minimize discomfort.

Restorations. Restorations like bonding, bridges, crowns, or implants will not respond to professional teeth whitening, making the restoration stand out more in contrast to your natural teeth.
