What is oral maxillofacial surgery?

For patients with a variety of injuries or defects in the mouth, teeth, jaws or face, oral and maxillofacial surgeries can be an effective treatment for restoring functionality, comfort and appearance.

Our team of highly trained oral surgeons perform treatment while patients are under anesthesia or general sedation. Typical surgeries may include multiple or complicated tooth extractions, dental implants installation, cyst or tumor removals, realignment of facial and jaw bones, and in more serious cases, the reconstruction of the face or jaw.

More commonly, however, oral surgery may be needed for:

  • Extractions of partially erupted or impacted third molars, also known as wisdom teeth
  • Extractions of broken teeth or roots, particularly below the gum line
  • Extractions due to overcrowding of the teeth
  • Installation of dental implants.

Additionally, Dental Depot specialists can help restore function and appearance for patients who live with congenital disabilities of the face and/or those who have experienced a facial trauma due to injury or illness.

Anesthesia Options

Due to the general nature of oral surgery and extractions, treatment is often performed while the patient is under IV sedation or IV general anesthesia under the supervision of a licensed professional. We are proud to offer a variety of anesthesia and sedation options to make our patients as comfortable as possible, including:

  • General anesthesia in the hospital/surgery center
  • Intravenous (IV) general anesthesia
  •  IV sedation
  • Oral sedation with Nitrous Oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) and local anesthesia
  • Nitrous Oxide and local anesthesia
  • Local Anesthesia only
