How Many Dental Checkups Should You Get Each Year?

How often should you visit the dentist?

One of the most common questions we get from new patients is how many dental checkups they should get per year. The answer to this question largely depends on each individual’s health status and dental history, and therefore should be scheduled at regular intervals as determined by your dentist.

However, the general answer to this question is at least two. Getting a minimum of two dental exams per year is a critical part of preventive dental care for everyone, even those who are completely on the ball with their dental hygiene practices at home.

Here’s why.

How important are dental checkups?

Plaque needs to be removed from teeth frequently. If it isn’t removed often enough, it can harden into tartar and lead to cavities and gum disease. Even those who are avid brushers and flossers – and do a great job at these tasks – can’t remove tartar. Dental instruments and tools are needed to deep clean your teeth, which is where twice yearly checkups come in.

Dental checkups help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease. And, for existing cavities or gum disease, checkups can catch them at the start of their development and treat them at the beginning, avoiding progression into more serious issues. Exams also give your dentist a chance to detect other oral health problems early, when they’re most treatable, preventing them from escalating into something more severe.

In addition to maintaining your oral health, having regular dental exams provides other health benefits. Since signs and symptoms of some systemic diseases, such as diabetes and lupus, can show up in the mouth first, a dental exam can be the first indication of these diseases, enabling you to seek medical treatment in the early stages.

What does a dentist look for during dental checkups?

If it’s been a while since you’ve had a dental checkup, your memory may be a little fuzzy about what exactly an exam consists of. To start, the dentist or hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and any signs of gum disease. The dentist will also evaluate your risk of developing other oral problems and check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities. Depending on what shows up during the exam, dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures may also be performed.

We’ll also discuss your diet, oral hygiene habits and other lifestyle factors that can affect oral health. And, of course, we’ll answer any questions you have and address any of your concerns.
